There are some rare occasions when an oral trauma, like a blow to the face, can carry so much force that it severely damages a tooth. Should the problem penetrate beyond the tooth enamel layer to compromise the root or socket of the tooth, your dentist, Dr. Miller Lewis or Dr. David Kelly might not be able to treat it with a root canal.

In a case this extreme, they may advocate total extraction of the tooth from the socket. Then they can suture the gums and treat the pain and keep an infection from developing in the gums. Later, your dentist can help replace the tooth with a dental bridge in Christiansburg, Virginia. This is a replicate tooth that is joined to dental crowns on each end. It is anchored in your mouth by a pair of abutments.

Dr. Miller Lewis and Dr. David Kelly will form the abutments by removing the tooth enamel from the two closest teeth. Then, they will create a detailed impression of the abutments and any other corresponding teeth in your bite pattern. This will be sent to our dental lab where your new bridge will be made. Next, they will cement hard, plastic, temporary crowns over each abutment to protect them while the lab technician works to produce your new bridge.

When it’s ready, our team will call you back in for a second appointment to install your bridge. It will be cemented onto the abutments with a very strong dental adhesive. With consistent oral hygiene habits, the bridge should restore your previously damaged tooth for many years to come. If you’re suffering from a damaged tooth, please call 540-257-6995 to have it treated.  At Christiansburg Dental, we are always here to help you maintain your smile health!
